If I were in charge of those EVA remakes…
Jun 6th
As many of you are likely aware, Evangelion was rebooted in movie form recently. These movies are a retelling of the EVA story with updated visuals and a modified plot, and seem to be getting a decent reception amongst fans. Currently, two out of four movies have been released.
Personally, I don’t think they’ve gone far enough with these remakes. Despite the fact that I find the movies to be an improvement over the old series, the whole thing is still a psychologically warped engagement. Not to mention that Shinji still sucks, Gendou is still a bastard, and so forth. As a result, I have thought of several modifications to the presentation that would have resulted in a far better experience.
- Since everyone hates Shinji, Asuka is the main character instead. She speaks only German throughout the whole thing.

- In order to better facilitate Asuka’s role, the soundtrack is provided by the German band Rammstein.
- Shinji is replaced by Touji.
- Actually, scratch that. Shinji is replaced by Animate Tenchou.
- Rei II and Rei III are active at the same time. Rei II has a real attitude problem because Gendou likes Rei III better, and the two constantly battle to see who the “real” one is. Rei II calls Rei III a drek and replica, and eventually the two have a fight to the death.
- Actually, forget everything I said above. Rei is replaced by a bunch of clones played by Arnold Schwarzenegger.
- Pen Pen becomes an EVA pilot. He pilots EVA Unit LNX, which is fully powered by open source software.
- Kaji is replaced by Samuel L. Jackson. His revised role in the reboot is to punch Gendou in the face repeatedly.
- “Angels” are replaced by giant versions of anime characters everyone wants to beat up, such as giant Light Yagami and giant Lelouch.
- The Third Impact is actually caused when Asuka, piloting EVA Unit 02, fights against Chuck Norris. The sheer awesomeness of the battle causes everyone to explode.
Oh noes! Teh ebil mangas!
Aug 16th
Once in a while, someone will come out of the woodwork on an art/comic/animation site and decry the evils of how “manga” is ruining our precious budding western artists. Posts like this one: http://www.webcomics.com/forum/post/864139 are an example, though this one is far tamer than earlier ones I’ve seen. I do not claim myself to have any shred of talent when it comes to art, but this sort of argument seems really stupid to me.
First of all, one needs to understand that the literal definition of the Japanese word manga is simply a comic or cartoon. This generally means that any comic would fall under that definition. When an English speaker says “manga,” however, we generally mean a comic that originates in Japan or at least mimics the style.
The odd complaint from these decries will be that manga is somehow not as stylized as western comics. This is a fancy way of saying, “all manga looks the same,” and is the sign of someone’s exposure to manga is likely very limited. Someone who is only vaguely familiar with the staple super heroes might say that all American comics look the same for the same reason. In reality, while Japanese comics tend to share some similar characteristics, there are a high amount of differentiations depending on the artist.
That aside, they will argue that by western art students adopting a “generic” manga style, they are stifling their ability to develop their own style. To be honest, I would be hesitant to call anyone who doesn’t experiment with multiple styles a serious art student. There are plenty of people who pick up “How to Draw the Marvel Way” and stick with that, which is just as unoriginal as copying CLAMP.
Since I’m not a serious artist / art student, I draw the way more similar to the way most of the stuff I read or watch looks like. Even then I still experiment from time to time. Someone with true talent and drive is likely to work hard at practicing various styles and techniques in order to develop their own styles regardless of their early influences.
Tales of Vesperia: The Movie
Aug 10th
Kotaku has posted some new images from the upcoming Tales of Vesperia movie. The movie is supposed to be a prequel to the game, when Yuri was a member of the Imperial Knights. I’m not sure how Estelle, Rita, or Raven will fit into the story since Yuri meets them all for the first time in the game. It also features a chibi-Repede!

Canaan Opening!
Jul 27th
The opening sequence for Type-Moon’s newest anime, Canaan. This show is pretty good, especially if you like the whole “girls with guns” genre.
Update: It appears that this isn’t officially a Type-Moon show as I had originally stated. There are a couple people who work on Type-Moon stuff in the staff, however.
